Fluteplayer

My name is Lynn Ragan and I am an experienced player of the Native American Flute. I have been performing since 1988 when I began playing native flute music on a Woodrow Haney flute (pictured to the right). Soon I was invited to play throughout NorthEast Oklahoma, Eastern Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, and Minnesota.

I sang with several northern drums from the Pow Wow circuit - noteably Whitecalf singers, Nemaha singers and Kola singers as well as being a guest of Lakota Nation singers and Rock Creek singers. Lynn has "sat in" with many other drums as well for over 10 years, both northern and southern. It is from this background, that I developed my style of fluteplaying. I do my best to accurately represent authentic styles of performance based on these wonderful songs.

Drawing from this background, and a formal music composition degree from UMKC, I try to promote the beautiful tradition of Native American flute music. My feeling is that it is a valid musical art form to be valued by all. Like any true art form, it grows and develops to reflect the heart and culture of the people it is derived from. In short, it's not a museum piece, but a living breathing work.

I have performed on live radio broadcasts and recorded for a documentary soundtrack. In addition to Native American flute music, I also have studied classical guitar and compose Gospel music. Other compositional works have been commissioned and performed by principle instrumentalists from ensembles such as the Kansas City Symphony orchestra and other area musicians. I have been honored to perform several times at the Community of Christ world conferences and Native American events.

I am pleased to share what I can of this musical tradition with you, and I hope that you enjoy.

May God bless your home and all your family relations,

Lynn Ragan
